BALBOA BUCCANEERS FOOTBALL Founded in 1928, Balboa High School has been a proud institution in the San Francisco community for nearly a century. Campus construction was completed in 1931, establishing the home of generations of Buccaneers who have carried the school's traditions of excellence, determination, and community pride forward. Today, Balboa High School athletics compete in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) San Francisco Section, with Buccaneer Football competing at the CIF Division 7-A level in the State of California. The Archie Chagonjian Era: A Golden Age of Buccaneer Football Few periods in Balboa football history compare with the extraordinary success of the program under legendary head coach Archie Chagonjian. Chagonjian took over as head coach in 1962 and guided the Buccaneers through one of the most dominant stretches in San Francisco high school football history. During his tenure, Balboa compiled an outstanding 111–39–5 record between 1962 and 1977. Contemporary accounts credit Chagonjian with six Thanksgiving Day playoff championships and six prep round-robin championships. The Buccaneers captured the annual Turkey Day championship six times during this historic era: 1967 — 11–0 1968 — 9–2 1971 — 11–0 1973 — 10–0–1 1975 — 12–0 1976 — 10–2 From 1967 through 1977, Balboa established itself as one of San Francisco's premier football programs, earning section or season championships throughout the era. The 1967 season was particularly memorable, with Balboa's championship football accomplishments recognized in the school's yearbook. The legacy of Coach Chagonjian remains an important part of Buccaneer football history. His teams established a standard of preparation, discipline, toughness, and championship expectations that would become part of the identity of Balboa football. The Return to Championship Glory The Buccaneer tradition has continued through generations of players, coaches, families, and alumni who have kept Balboa football moving forward. That championship tradition reached a new era under "Coach Fred Velasquez", a Balboa alumnus who returned to his alma mater and helped restore the Buccaneers to prominence. Velasquez's connection to Balboa is deeply personal; he graduated from the school in 1989 and later returned to the football program as a coach. Under Coach Velasquez, Balboa football reached the summit of California high school football. 2021 — CIF State Champions In 2021, the Balboa Buccaneers captured the CIF Division 7-A State Championship, defeating the Taft Toreadors to bring a California State Championship back to Balboa High School. SFUSD recognized Coach Velasquez, his coaching staff, and the Buccaneers following their historic run. The championship represented more than a trophy. It marked the beginning of a new championship era for Balboa football. 2024 — Back on Top The Buccaneers returned to the state championship stage in 2024, winning the CIF Division 7-A State Championship under Coach Fred Velasquez. CIF records list Balboa defeating Pioneer 55–21 in the state championship game. 2025 — Back-to-Back State Champions In 2025, Balboa once again proved that the program had established itself among California's elite. The Buccaneers captured the CIF Division 7-A State Championship, defeating South El Monte 42–8 in the state championship game. The victory gave Balboa consecutive state championships and another defining chapter in Buccaneer history. A Championship Tradition Continues From the championship teams of the 1960s and 1970s under Archie Chagonjian to the state championship teams of 2021, 2024, and 2025 under Coach Fred Velasquez, Balboa Buccaneers Football has built a legacy that spans generations. The names and faces may change. The game may evolve. But the standard remains the same: WORK. DISCIPLINE. TOUGHNESS. PRIDE. CHAMPIONSHIPS.
